The M1 Garand was the U.S. Army’s standard service rifle in World War II and the Korean War. John Garand’s design was the first widely deployed semi‑automatic service rifle, giving U.S. infantry a high rate of aimed fire compared to bolt‑action adversaries.

The AR‑15 is the civilian semi‑automatic descendant of the military M16 family developed by Eugene Stoner in the late 1950s and adopted by the U.S. military in the 1960s. The design emphasizes accuracy, modularity, and light weight.

Most AR‑15/M16 variants use a direct gas impingement system (or short‑stroke gas piston in some modern rifles). In the classic direct impingement, gas is tapped from the barrel and channeled back through a gas tube to the bolt carrier group, using gas pressure to cycle the bolt and action. The bolt uses multiple locking lugs (rotating bolt) for a secure lockup.
